There are basically three fireplace types: fireplace insert, zero clearance fireplaces and free standing fireplaces. You can find more information on each of these in the articles below. I also recommend you review our pages on the common styles of fireplace and visit our pages on venting.

• Fireplace Insert
  The fireplace insert is designed to be installed into an existing fireplace location and convert the operation of that fireplace to another fuel source. Gas fireplace inserts are very popular.
  
  
• Zero Clearance Fireplace
  Zero clearance fireplace allows for minimal space between the fireplace unit and combustible materials such as studs and wallboard.
  
  
• Free Standing Fireplace
  A free standing fireplace is a great addition to any room where supplemental heat is desired such as the basement.
