Propane Fireplace - An Efficient and Clean Alternative

Although not as popular as gas or electric fireplaces an LP or propane fireplace is an economical alternative to a wood-burning fireplace. Propane fireplace inserts come in a variety of configurations and styles to compliment and enhance your home’s decor. With such styles as wall insets or the popular freestanding unit, plus low clearance requirements, allow greater flexibility on where you can install your propane gas fireplace.

There are several advantages to choosing a propane fireplace over a wood fireplace; propane burns more efficiently and cleaner than wood, propane is cheaper to operate than wood and propane produces fewer pollutants. Unlike wood-burning fireplaces that emit smoke that could potentially damage furniture and draperies, propane fireplaces burn much cleaner. Flying ambers or sparks and smoldering ashes are common safety concerns when operating a traditional wood fireplace, but the design of propane fireplaces eliminates this problem.

Please review these helpful tips to optimize performance and increase safety while using your propane fireplace:

  • If you own a direct-vent fireplace it will require outside air to support combustion, regularly check the chamber on the outside wall and ensure that there are no obstructions or debris that could block the vent. A blocked vent could possible lead to carbon monoxide build up.
  • Remove all combustible materials from around the fireplace box; refer to the manufacturer’s manual for specific distances.
  • Ensure that your propane fireplace is installed according the manufacturer’s guidelines and it is compliant with local, state, provincial or national building codes, this will help to ensure the safety and performance of the unit.

It is highly recommended that you schedule regular cleaning and maintenance by a certified inspector at least once a year.
